TIAGABINE
Gabitril
Indication:
Used as adjunctive therapy in adults and children 12 years or older in the treatment
of partial seizures.
Possible side effects: The most common side effects that you
may or may not experience are dizziness (lightheadedness), lack of energy, drowsiness,
nausea, nervousness (irritability), tremor, abdominal pain, or difficulty concentrating.
You need to be aware that anytime your medications are being changed, there may
be an increase in seizure frequency. Keep in mind that side effects vary among
individuals. If you have any problem with medication, you should let your doctor
know, whether or not it is a problem listed above.
Dosage: Gabitril is available in 4 dosage strengths: 4 mg yellow
tablets, 12 mg green tablets, 16 mg blue tablets and 20 mg pink tablets. The usual
dose for adults is between 32 and 56 mg per day in 3 or 4 divided doses. Gabitril
should be taken with food and can be dosed with meals. If a fourth dose is required,
it should be taken with a snack.
Drug interactions: Carbamazepine (Tegretol, Carbatrol) and phenytoin
(Dilantin) and phenobarbital increase tiagabine (Gabitril) clearance. Tiagabine
enhances central nervous system effects of central nervous system depressants.
Other drugs can affect or be affected by tiagabine.
Blood levels: The expected range for tiagabine blood levels has
not been established.
