The Johns Hopkins Epilepsy Center conducts a number of investigational antiepileptic drug trials. There are active programs studying the efficacy of, and mechanisms underlying, the ketogenic diet.

We have an active interest in developing and improving surgical methods for the treatment of seizures intractable to medication. These interests include studies on the use of both non-invasive and invasive evaluation techniques prior to surgery. They also include studies of hemispherectomy and multiple subpial transection procedures. Finally, we are studying new forms of surgery. We are undertaking a number of studies related to the mechanisms underlying cortical functioning, especially as they relate to language and memory.

We also have an active interest in developing computer based methods for detection and analysis of seizure related activity on the EEG. We have particularly been utilizing neural networks and are exploring other techniques as well.
