OPHTHALMOLOGIC
EVALUATION
The ophthalmologic evaluation of patients with SWS involves testing for the presence of glaucoma and an assessment of vision. Glaucoma can develop at any time in patients with SWS. Infants can develop eye enlargement secondary to the glaucoma. Vision should also be regularly assessed for the development of near-sightedness and visual field-cuts. Ophthalmologic evaluations are also essential to screen for the development of vascular abnormalities of the eye that can threaten vision. Evaluation of children under the age of three years for glaucoma usually involves an examination under anesthesia (EUA) in the operating room.
At the JHHKKI Sturge-Weber Syndrome center, patients with SWS are evaluated by an ophthamologist at the Wilmer Institute and, if needed evaluated by the Glaucoma group. Additional referrals may be made as needed for evaluations by Oculoplastic surgery.
