Treatment
of port-wine stains:
Laser treatment of port-wine
stains are often effective in reducing the prominence of the facial
port-wine stains in SWS. Repeated treatments are required over
time. The Pediatric Dermatology and Cutaneous Laser Clinic utilizes
the new Candela flash lamp pumped, yellow, tunable dye laser is
available for treating infants, children, and adults with vascular
malformations, including port-wine stains. This laser targets
vascular marks remarkably well and the risk of scarring is negligible.
A local anesthetic is generally used during the treatments. Although
the ideal age for laser treatment of port-wine stains in Sturge-Weber
syndrome is not known, it is currently recommended for laser treatments
to be started in infancy. When appropropriate, patients are also
referred for other services involved in skin care, including plastic
surgery and oral surgery.
Treatment
of headaches:
A variety of approaches can be used in the treatment of headaches in Sturge-Weber
Syndrome, depending on the frequency and severity of the symptoms, including
hydration, the avoidance of triggers, use of abortive medications to treat an
attack and the use of prophylactic medications to prevent attacks. In Sturge-Weber
syndrome, headaches frequently occur around the time of seizures or stroke-like
episodes and these issues should be taken into account in the treatment as well.
Treatment
of epilepsy:
There are many anticonvulsants (AEDs) currently available for
the treatment of seizures in SWS. Some patients with SWS have
uncontrolled seizures after trying a number of medications and
these children are considered for surgical interventions.
Treatment
of Glaucoma:
Glaucoma in SWS requires the combined management of medical and
surgical approaches. |
