The Johns Hopkins Hospital is a 900 bed academic hospital located in Baltimore, Maryland. The Department of Neurosciences encompasses 82 beds on four inpatient units. The continuum of Neuro patient care spans critical care, progressive care, Brain Rescue Unit © and acute care units. Our nurses collaborate with multiple disciplines in an integrated neurology and neurosurgery patient care environment. We are the department of choice if you are looking to become a clinical expert in specialty areas such as:
  • cerebral resuscitation
  • management of cerebral edema and increased intracranial pressure
  • hemodynamic instability
  • management of airway and respiratory compromise
  • spinal reconstruction
  • monitoring abnormal electrical activity of the brain
The Department of Neuroscience Nursing provides a rich environment of learning and professional growth. We have an 8-week preceptor guided orientation. Unit-based clinical nurse specialists or educators provide support, mentoring and ongoing bedside staff education. We offer educational programs including current neuroscience nursing and acute patient care techniques, classes emphasizing advanced clinical skills, cardiac arrest management, and preparation for the national neuro certification exam. Neurosurgical Nurse Practitioners on the acute care units provide an expert clinical resource to the bedside nurse.

Our shared governance structure with unit-based committees offers opportunities to share talents and professional growth. This participative model promotes an environment of team collaboration and autonomous nursing practice.
