This case is a 46-year-old gentleman
with an 8-year history of Parkinson's disease. His PD began with tremor
in the left arm and dragging of the left foot. After several years of
medical treatment, he presented with motor fluctuations, freezing, and
dyskinesias. Placement of staged bilateral STN-DBS was performed in August,
2000 (right side) and in April, 2001 (left side). These videos were taken
during post-operative follow-up for programming. The videos demonstrate
the patient walking with the stimulators turned off (left video) and with
the stimulators turned on (right video).
This
case is a 54-year-old school teacher who suffered a posterior thalamic
infarct 4 years prior and developed a disabling intention tremor in the
right upper extremity. After failure to improve with multiple trails of
medications, the patient had a left thalamic (Vim) DBS placed in December,
2000. The video on the left demonstrates the tremor and handwriting sample
with the stimulator off, while the video on the right shows the tremor
and handwriting sample with the stimulator on.
This video begins
with Dr. Grill turning the stimulator off.
The tremor returns twenty seconds later, after which Dr. Grill
turns the stimulator on again.
