Fellowship in Neurosciences Critical Care

The Neuroscience Critical Care Unit (NCCU) comprises an 22 bed intensive care unit. The NCCU encompasses two patient care areas, each centered around a nursing station. One area (a.k.a. the South side) has 10, and the other area (a.k.a. the North side) 12, beds. Both patient care areas are overseen by the fellows and attending physicians, while direct patient care is provided by resident housestaff on the North side and neurosciences critical care nurse practitioners on the South side. The NCCU physician team consists of full-time practitioners specially trained in Neurology, Anesthesiology, and Critical Care Medicine. The population of patients in the NCCU is diverse and includes neurosurgical post-operative patients as well as critically ill patients with multisystem disease and neurologic dysfunction. Subarachnoid hemorrhage, acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, encephalitis/meningitis, and status epilepticus are typical diagnoses.

Two-year fellowship positions are available for neurologists, neurosurgeons, and anesthesiologists desiring to specialize in Neuroscience Critical Care medicine. A major program goal is to train Neurocritical Care Clinician Scientists. The first year as a Junior Fellow is spent in developing skills of patient care, teaching and supervision of housestaff. The second year as a Senior Fellow confers added responsibility of team management, formal teaching of neurophysiologic concepts and development of innovative treatment strategies in the critical care environment. Research is mandatory, and it is expected that fellows take part in 12 months of research, either in the clinical arena or in the laboratory. Each fellow has the combined resources of major contributing departments at their disposal. Once an area of interest is identified, a formal mentorship is established.
