Fellowship in Cerebrovascular Neurology

The Fellowship Program in the Cerebrovascular Division affords extensive experience in clinical vascular neurology as well as clinical research training. Two fellowships will be offered for either one or two years, according to candidates' requirements and the needs of the program. The fellowship will rotate between the Acute Stroke and Stroke Consultation Service (Director, Dr. Robert Wityk). In addition, fellows will rotate through the Cerebrovascular and General Neurology clinics of the four attending physicians attached to the program. Comprehensive experience will be provided in the management of patients with cerebrovascular disease, both in the acute phase as well as in the consultation services, with a strong emphasis in pathophysiological principles.

Clinical trial studies include treatment of patients with thrombolytic therapy and novel antiplatelet agents, research studies into the therapeutic and molecular basis of action of neuroprotective agents, acute stroke imaging with magnetic resonance spectroscopy, diffusion weighted imaging, perfusion imaging and PET scanning. In addition, the Division operates a large computer laboratory in which modeling and the application of statistical and mathematical approaches to the study of forebrain influences on cardiac rhymicity are studied.

It is anticipated that the fellows will complete at least two research projects of their own using the extensive databases which are provided by the program. Epidemiological and biostatistical experience will be provided by these clinical studies, which will be supervised by the physicians and biostatisticians attached to the program. In addition, there is a possibility of taking courses in the School of Hygiene and Public Health.
